Our Black Belts

The Chicago Martial Arts Institute practices the art of Cooper-Ryu Veejitsu-Te, as developed by Grand Master Robert J. Cooper, emphasizing the unique techniques and applications of Vee Jitsu Ryu Jiu-jitsu (’65) and Chung Do Kwan Tae Kwon Do.  In this class the student will focus on developing strong basics in both jiu-jitsu and tae kwon do.

You will begin by learning proper technique for rolls and falls (ukemi) in order to distribute the force of a fall and safely hit the ground.  This enables us to be better prepared to handle the throws taught later in the class, as well as the spills we all take outside of the classroom in real life.  The difficulty of the falls and rolls taught will progress as the student gains a level of proficiency and comfort, at the student’s own pace.

As you become more comfortable with the falls, throws are taught, starting with basic sweeps, to hip and shoulder throws, to the more advanced joint manipulations and locks.  Small class sizes ensure a great deal of one on one time with the instructors.

Tae kwon do is utilized as the striking system of our style.  As such, in addition to throws, students will also learn the basics of blocking, kicking, and punching in order to become a more well-rounded martial artist.

Katas (or forms) are taught as you progresses through the ranks.  We teach the Kuk-ma forms and the Pyung-an series, with advanced forms being taught for black belt level and up.

Sparring is taught as well, but in a safe, supportive environment.  The safety of our students is our primary focus, and students are encouraged to work at their own pace.
